According to Google, YouTube’s more than one billion monthly users collectively watch more than one billion hours of video per day. This is quite a video. And recently Pinkfong’s “Baby Shark Dance” became the first video to break the 10 billion views mark, all of which are among the top 10 most-viewed YouTube videos.
Do you feel that youtube has become just a part of your life since 2005? The Internet was a very different place at that time. Videos are hosted in large, load-to-load files on the site backend and on peer-to-peer file sharing networks such as LimeWire and Kazaa. Making video faster and more accessible was definitely YouTube’s forte, and in turn, it is now the second most visited site in the world, after its parent company, Google.
Baby Shark Dance (13.18 billion views)
Good luck finding anyone who has survived the last decade without hearing this song. (If you do, we salute you.) Those who have kids, and those who don’t, know Baby Shark. Do it, do it, do it The version of the song that most of us know is the work of Pinkfong, part of a South Korean entertainment company called SmartStudy. It took the title of most-viewed video of 2020, surpassing “Despacito” four years after it originally debuted. On January 13, 2022, it became the first YouTube video to surpass 10 billion views, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon. So get used to it. Do it, do it, do it
Despacito (8.23 billion views)
Are you still ready for Luis Fonsi (Fonsi!) and Daddy Yankee’s Spanish-language slapper in 2022? so are we. Despite its own Bieber remix, it is the OG version that holds the most-viewed crown (before being dethroned by “Baby Shark Dance”). Can we say this is the top actual song on the list? The 2017 record – It’s Going on in Your Mind Right Now – became a global hit and, five years later, remains one of the biggest pop songs worldwide. It’s safe to say that YouTube has played a huge role in that success.
Johnny Johnny Yes Papa (6.76 billion views)
It’s weird and it gets even weirder from here. “Johnny Johnny Yes Papa” turns the familiar “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” song into a tale of family lies and sugar abuse. Naturally, it was destined for the meme treatment, which it received in abundance on Twitter and YouTube. An Indian YouTube channel, “Billion Surprise Toys”, went viral by adding “Baby Shark” references and “Gangnam Style” dance moves. It’s been described as “disturbing” and “absurd” and yes, yes. If you’re interested in that kind of thing, take a look yourself.
Bath Song (6.33 billion views)
The five videos below, among the most viewed YouTube videos of all time, are an uncanny journey through the uncanny valley. Ready? “Bath Song” brought two tracks – “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” and yes, “Baby Shark Dance” (Washmi Arms Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo) to over five billion views. It is a song about cleanliness, which gives a great message. But there is a strangeness in all this which we cannot ignore.
Shape of You (6.05 billion views)
Take a sigh of relief, this is a real song. Hello, Ed Sheeran! From his 2017 album, Divide, this track is a hit wherever it’s played, and considering the singer’s social media reach, it’s no surprise that he’ll score plenty of hits on YouTube as well. For More Ads, “Thinking Out Loud” and “Perfect” also charted in the top 30 most viewed on YouTube, at #18 and #28 respectively.
See You Again (5.98 billion views)
Even if you haven’t watched the entire Fast and the Furious franchise, you should still be familiar with “See You Again.” The emotional final track of Furious 7 was a tribute to the film’s late star Paul Walker. Featuring Charlie Puth on piano and vocals as well as a heartfelt verse from rapper Wiz Khalifa, it’s a hit formula with a heartfelt message.
Wheels on the Bus (5.46 billion views)
If you’re around any kids, this poem, originally written and composed by Verna Hills, is an ear-catcher. The poem has a rhythmic pattern on the theme of different features of the bus which attracts children. This popular poem inspires enthusiasm for travel. Kids love riding the bus with this favorite nursery rhyme!
Two-Word Phonetic Song (5.42 billion views)
At the top is the same video that once knocked our old friend Psy and “Gangnam Style” out of the top ten. Yes, this is another kids video. But, on the plus side, it offers some educational value: A for Apple, C for Cat, U for Uncle; you get the idea. Here to learn.
Uptown Funk (4.99 billion views)
Justice with music! Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ undeniable hit “Uptown Funk” is climbing the charts, offering some hope for the future. These Earworms took home hardware for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards, and really, we’re excited to see the rest of the entries on this list.
Learning Colors – Colored Eggs on the Farm (4.94 billion views)
That’s the spirit. Allegedly made “for kids,” this spooky video from Russia is set on “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” and teaches kids about the six essential(?) colors: black, brown, pink, white, red. And blue. How does it do that? Males naturally open their heads to fill the goo through small eggs. And for whatever reason, that fourth egg looks ominous. Great stuff all around.
