The Goal of the United Nations

The United Nations serves four primary functions:

  • Keeping the peace across the planet.
  • Establish and nurture cordial connections among member nations.
  • To assist countries in cooperating towards the shared goals of alleviating poverty, combating hunger, sickness, and illiteracy, and encouraging respect for each other’s rights and freedoms.
  • To become the focal point for bringing countries together in order to accomplish all of these aims.

United Nations Organisations

  • General Assembly: The General Assembly is the United Nations’ primary cognitive and policy-making body, with universal representation, that is, all member nations are represented in the General Assembly. Every September, the General Assembly gathers to examine and debate topics of peace and security. It also chooses a General Assembly president for a one-year term.
  • Security Council: Under the UN Charter, the Security Council is charged with the primary task of safeguarding global peace. Each council member gets one vote. The council identifies occurrences that may pose a danger to peace and security and calls on its members to assist the concerned parties in resolving the issue peacefully via diplomatic methods. The Security Council is led by a Presidency that rotates every month. It has a total of 15 members, with 5 of them being permanent.
  • Economic and Social Council: It is the primary organisation for economic coordination, evaluation, and discourse, as well as the execution of globally agreed-upon development objectives. It also acts as a venue for debate on long-term development objectives. It has 54 members in total, who are chosen by the General Assembly for three-year periods that overlap.
  • Trusteeship Council: The Trusteeship Council was established in 1945 under Chapter XIII of the UN Charter with the primary objective of supervising the operation of the 11 Trust areas put under the management of the council’s seven members. The members were responsible for ensuring the growth of local government in these states. The council was disbanded in 1994, when the majority of Trust territory gained independence. It may convene again on the President’s proposal or at the request of a majority of the council, the General Assembly, or the Security Council.
  • International Court of JusticeThe International Court of Justice is the primary judicial arm of the United Nations, with its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. This body’s major duty is to resolve disputes between member nations in conformity with international law, as well as to give views and recommendations on topics presented or referred to it.
  • Secretariat: It is made up of the Secretary-General and international United Nations staff members who carry out the day-to-day administration of the United Nations Systems as directed by the General Assembly. The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly for a five-year term on the suggestion of the Security Council. The secretariat also serves as the organization’s patron and advocate for the world’s people, particularly the impoverished and vulnerable.

The United Nations’ Success

It is impossible to establish if the UN proposal was successful or not. However, the common consensus is that, although the UN has its own set of mistakes, the present Russian invasion of Ukraine being the most recent example, it has helped to avert innumerable wars and has allowed nations to peacefully settle their disagreements. Aside from that, it has also played a role in moving the globe towards sustainability and has made attempts to conserve nations’ cultural legacy. In 2001, the United Nations was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work in peacekeeping.

The following are some of the United Nations’ biggest victories:

  • Cease-fire in 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict
  • During the 1947 Indo-Pak Kashmir war, there was a cease-fire.
  • Congo and West New Guinea were helped to decolonize.
  • Libya’s withdrawal from disputed territory in compliance with an ICJ order.
